As an architectural photographer based in Miami, I often find myself traveling for assignments, capturing stunning designs and unique spaces that tell a story. During a recent trip to North Carolina for another project, I couldn’t resist making a detour to the James B. Hunt Jr. Library at NC State University in Raleigh. This wasn’t part of my assignment—it was simply for the love of what I do.
Why the Hunt Library?
The James B. Hunt Jr. Library is a modern architectural marvel designed by the renowned Norwegian firm Snøhetta in collaboration with local North Carolina architects Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee (now Clark Nexsen). Since opening its doors in 2013, it has become a symbol of innovation and creativity. For me, it was an irresistible opportunity to explore and photograph a space that embodies the fusion of design, technology, and function.
A Photographer’s Perspective
From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the library’s striking exterior. The glass and steel facade, accented by angled aluminum louvers, creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow that evolves throughout the day. As the late afternoon sun hit the building, its reflective surfaces glowed with warmth, highlighting the precision of its design.
Inside, the library’s innovative features continued to inspire me. The BookBot, an automated book retrieval system, is both a technological wonder and a space-saving masterpiece. The open seating areas, bold colors, and abundance of natural light make it a haven for creativity and collaboration—a dream setting for any architectural photographer.
Built with Vision and Craftsmanship
The library’s design was brought to life by Skanska USA, whose exceptional craftsmanship ensured that every detail of Snøhetta’s vision was executed flawlessly. From the intricate louvers to the seamless integration of cutting-edge technology, the library is a testament to the power of collaboration between architects and builders.
A Personal Experience
While my trip to North Carolina was primarily for other assignments, taking the time to photograph the Hunt Library was a decision driven by pure passion. As photographers, we’re often drawn to spaces that challenge and inspire us—and this was one of those moments. Although I couldn’t stay until dusk, the time I did spend there was enough to remind me why I love this craft.
Bringing Inspiration Back to Miami
Though the James B. Hunt Jr. Library is located in Raleigh, its innovative design offers lessons and inspiration that resonate far beyond North Carolina. In Miami’s vibrant architectural scene, where modern design meets cultural diversity, the library’s blend of form and function serves as a powerful example of what’s possible.
